Electronic
passport, which contains a biometric chip on the front side to maintain the passenger’s
information like name, date of birth, address etc. in a digital form, in simple
it is stated as a digital identification for the people travelling country to
country. It is provided by the Ministry of External Affairs. The electronic chip
made up of higher technologies. It will record all the passengers travelling
information thoroughly. And because of the digital scanning system, delays due
to paper documents may be controlled. Countries like US, UK, GERMANY, and most
of the European countries have already processing the E-Passport facility and
in some countries, facility of E-Visa is also available.
E-Passport
in India:
On 25th
June 2008, Indian Passport Authority issued the first E-Passport to Pratibha
Patil, the former president of India. Up to 20,000 E-Passports were issued only
for diplomats, and for the officials of Indian embassy at the early stage.
Introducing
E-Passport for citizens:
During the
Union Budget 2022, Finance Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman stated a
official information about the E-Passport issuance for the citizens and confirmed
that the E-Passport embedded with a electronic chip will be launched by the end
of 2022 or in first few months of 2023.
Tech Service
provided by:
Tata
Consultancy Service, a software exporter in India, will give the digital technology
to E-Passports.
Current
Status of E-Passport in India:
Currently in
India, E-Passport for citizens has been came into effect and any one can apply
for E-Passport with the same process which we used to apply for general passport
or Re-issue of E-Passport are also in existence. But E-Passport with the digital
chip are likely to be rolled out by the end of 2022 or in undoubtedly in 2023.
