They are checking parking lots, and make owners to make fine of vehicles with defective number plates.

Traffic police have visited all parking areas on February 25 and register cases against owners of vehicles with defective number plates and fined for Rs. 500 for the first offense. The repeat offenders will attract a fine of ₹1,500.

To avoid the penalty, your number plate

1) Should not contain photo of actors or actress ,

2) Should not contain flag symbol of any political party,

3) Should not be broken or erased numbers

The number plate should be very clean as it should contain only vehicle number and no modification is allowed.

Currently 168 checkpoints controlled by the GCTP all over the city to supervise the motor vehicles and imposing the violators not to leave before rectifying their number plates in the nearest shop.

1/4th of the people have been paying fine instead of rectifying the mistake.

Kapilkumar C. Saratkar, Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic, on Thursday said special drive will be conducted on February 25 at parking lots in Chennai to crack down on defective number plates and first time violators will be fined ₹500.

He also said,

"Our aim is not just to penalise violators but to ensure compliance.  During the two-day drive, we ensured they got it changed immediately and not just escape with a penalty".

The major motive behind this strict approach is to stop misuse of stolen vehicles and to improve  easy ways of identify the theft or hit-and-run cases.
